114th Founders Day Celebration

On 14 August 2007, Victorians around the world rejoiced as our beloved school celebrated its 114th birthday. How grateful we are to be a part of this great institution and we have our founding fathers to thank for that. The school celebrated by inviting a few ex-Victorians to share their experiences of what it meant to be a Victorian with the current crop of students.

V.I.O.B.A. also didn't miss out on the celebration as the new 07/08 V.I.O.B.A. and V.I.O.B.A. Foundation committee including a few other Old Boys (and an Old Girl) plus the principal, Pn. Azizah Othman and senior assistant, En. Othman Abd Samad got together at the V.I.O.B.A. clubhouse for the celebration. The Old Boys then serenaded the occasion by singing the school song before Dato' Yusli Mohamed Yusoff did the honor of cutting the cake. Happy Birthday VI!

SJI vs. VI Friendlies, Gathering of Batch '57 and Union Cup Soft Launch

On 5 August 2007, a couple of friendly matches between Victorians and Johanians were also held before the alumni league match. The 1st game was between VI '81 vs. St. John '87 which ended with the scoreline 4-2 in favor of the Victorians. Jack Oon was a hat-trick hero for VI '81 with Wong Chee Loke grabbing the other goal. It goes to show that even with a significant age gap between the two teams, Victorians still show their class and came out on top.

The 2nd game saw a mixture of Victorians from batches of '96 & '99 vs. St. John '96. The game was also won by the Victorians with the scoreline 4-2 with Ahmad Nazim Ali and Muhammad Nasir Ali scoring 2 of the goals.

These friendlies were jointly organized by VI '96 and St. John '96 to coincide with the soft launch of Union Cup 2007. Union Cup 2007 was mooted by the batch of '96 from both schools as an annual event to bridge the rivalry between the two schools. More details on the event will be posted as soon as it is finalized.

On that Sunday, the batch of '57 also held a gathering at the VIOBA clubhouse and they were more than happy to pose for a picture for VIOBA Events blog.

The 'Merdeka' Batch of '57 at the front entrance of VIOBA clubhouse with Dato' Kok Wee Kiat in the centre and alongside him is one of the webmasters of The Victoria Institution Web Page, Mr. Chung Chee Min (proudly wearing the Mokhtar Dahari Challenge Shield '07 T-shirt)

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 7 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 7 (SJAA vs. VIOBA)

Our last league game of this year against SJAA was played on 5 August 2007 at VI Greens. The game was highly anticipated due to the fact that we were still in contention for the title (being a point behind league leaders, STAROBA), we were defending our unbeaten streak in the league and that it was a derby match against the Johanians.

We had to make a few changes in the starting eleven due to unavailability of some players due to other commitments. It went from bad to worse as the game got under way because it seemed that our players weren't up to speed earlier on and our goal was constantly under siege from the Johanians forwards. Midway through the 1st half, our players settled down and managed to create a few half chances to open the scoring but the half ended 0-0.

The Johanians did manage to grab the lead early on in the 2nd half. The goal came as a result of a failed offside trap which left one of their players on a one-on-one situation with our keeper which he duly converted. A 50-strong crowd (made up of Hostel Boys and Old Boys) cheered our players on to lift their spirit. After a few substitutions, the game started to swing in our favor. Soon after, we earned a corner kick which was taken by Ahmad Fazli Dzulkifli ('96), the beautifully weighted ball made its way to Mohammad Razeen Khalid ('97), a 2nd half substitute, who climbed highest to head the ball in from point blank range. Mohd Farid Hamid ('97) then missed a gilt-edged chance after a solo run from midfield by shooting straight at the keeper. We surged forward to search for a winning goal knowing the league title was on the line but to no avail. The game ended 1-1.

News then filtered through from Bangi that STAROBA had won their encounter with MCOBA 1-0 which made the result from our game academic. We finished as the runner-up in Division One behind STAROBA this year with the record of 4 wins, 3 draws and no losses. In doing so, we have our heads held high as we were the only team to beat STAROBA and became the only unbeaten team in the league this year.
(Malaysia Alumni League Division One Final Standings)

On behalf of the VIOBA Football Team, I would like to thank Mr. Adam Muza Muhayen for sponsoring bottled drinking water for the team this year. I would also like to thank the team captain, Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti and Syed Shadzly Wafa who are hanging up their boots from representing VIOBA to pave the way for new and up and coming players to represent the team.

Next up is the ANSARA Cup, which starts on 5 August 2007. We were the runner-up in 2005 and hopefully we will bring back the cup this year.

VIOBA Annual Golf Tournament 2007 Report & Highlights

VIOBA Annual Golf Tournament 2007 was held recently on 29 July 2007 at Seri Selangor Golf Club in Kota Damansara, PJ. The tournament which was only planned three weeks prior to the date, managed to attract about 60 golfers which were separated into 15 flights. The likes of Dato' Yusli Mohamed Yusoff, Dato' Mustafa Mohd Ali, Datuk Jamaluddin Mansor and Dato' Dina Rizal were joined by other Old Boys in competing for the honour of representing VIOBA in the upcoming Perdana Shield Golf Tournament 2007 and Inter-Alumni Golf Tournament 2007.

It started raining from 6 a.m. which caused some concerns whether the course is playable due to rain. However, the rain didn't seem to dampen our avid golfers' spirit and they started turning up at Seri Selangor Golf Club since 7 a.m. and were raring to go. Fortunately, the skies cleared at around 8 a.m. and by 8.30 a.m., our golfers started loading their golf bags on the back of their buggies and went to their designated starting holes to tee off. The fairways and greens were a bit fast considering it rained for quite a bit earlier. The course is quite tough to those golfers who are unfamiliar with it due to the narrow fairways and fast greens.

At around 2 p.m. our golfers started coming in after finishing their round of golf. After handing in their scorecards, they enjoyed lunch while waiting for the final results and the prize giving ceremony. All in all, it was a successful event considering the organizing committee had only three weeks to plan the whole thing.

Rashdan handing over VIOBA's pennant to the Organizer

On 22 July 2007, TKC/OGA organized an inter-alumni bowling tournament at Pyramid Bowl, Sunway Pyramid. We managed to assemble a team just a couple of days prior to the tournament. Our bowlers are made up of Old Boys from the batch of '96 and they carried the VIOBA name well during the tournament. They eventually finished with a respectable position which is a marked improvement from last year's VIOBA representatives who finished in last place out of 15 teams. Hopefully, we can send a well-prepared team or two for next year's event to challenge for the title.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 6 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 6 (STAROBA vs. VIOBA)

The crucial fixture against the formidable STAROBA which would make or break our title aspirations this year was played on 22 July 2007 at Padang ILP, Bangi. This is a team which have won all four of their previous fixtures without conceding any goals. For the Victorians, this was the time to stand up and be counted, to prove their mettle against a quality opposition.

We started the game a bit sluggish, due to the fact that the pitch was quite soggy and maybe the players were a little bit nervous and showing too much respect to the opposition. Eventually, the team settled down and started to stamp their mark on the game. Our first goalscoring chance came when Mohamad Afizal ('98) blasted a freekick against the bar, Briyan Lembang Hashim ('96) followed through on the rebound with an overhead kick but his attempt sailed just over with the STAROBA's keeper stranded. The 1st goal came soon after, a superb interlink play down the right hand side released Mohd Noor Shakher ('00) who sprinted to the touchline before unleashing a dangerous low cross. Briyan Lembang Hashim threw himself but failed to connect properly with his attempted diving header, the ball came off a STAROBA's defender and ended up in the back of the net. Briyan Lembang Hashim did eventually make good on his near misses by scoring the 2nd goal, a cracking shot from outside the penalty box which ended up in the top right hand corner of STAROBA's goal. STAROBA pulled one back from a freekick which was misjudged by our goalkeeper, Muizzuddin Muhamad ('05) who was distracted by an onrushing STAROBA's player. However, we strike back immediately after Briyan Lembang Hashim put Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti ('94) through, who slotted home with a cool, smart finish. The 1st half ended with the scoreline 1-3 in our favor.

We started the 2nd half with a more defensive setup knowing that we have a two goal cushion. We invited STAROBA to come at us before hitting back swiftly with counter-attacking of our own. We tested the STAROBA's keeper with a few long range efforts which eventually paid off after Wan Khairul Ardrin ('02) hit a scorcher from outside the box to kill off the game. The game finished with the scoreline 1-4 and I have to admit this is our most satisfying victory to date this year.

Our last league game this year will be played on 5 August 2007 (Sunday) and it is a much anticipated derby match against St. John's Institution on our hometurf, VI Greens. We will go into the match with all to play for after MCOBA was beaten by St. John's on matchday 6. As things stand, we are now top of the table with four wins and two draws. The league title will be decided during the last round of matches which will see VIOBA vs. SJAA and STAROBA vs. MCOBA. (Malaysia Alumni Division One League Table)

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 5 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 5 (VIOBA vs. ANSARA Kuantan)

On 15 July 2007, we played our 5th league game this year against ANSARA Kuantan on our hometurf. We started the match like a house on fire right from the opening whistle. The frustration stemming from our disappointing result in the last game was quickly cast aside and the team played superb, enterprising football in the 1st half of the game. We ended the half with a 3-0 scoreline in our favor with goals from Mohamad Afizal ('98), Shahrul Nizam ('95) and the team captain, Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti ('94) (who's celebrating his 30th birthday).

We didn't let up in the 2nd half and were rewarded with another goal early on in the half, with the birthday boy, Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti adding to his tally. We created a few more chances but failed to capitalize and midway through the 2nd half, our performance started to drop as fatigue sets in. ANSARA Kuantan grabbed a couple of late goals to make the scoreline more respectable from their point of view. A stellar all-round performance with Mohamad Afizal pulling the strings in midfield and Mohd Noor Shakher ('00) making darting runs down the right flank and helped set up two of the goals. But ultimately, the man of the match goes to the captain, Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti who scored a brace and led the team well in attack.

Our next match is a crucial one against the current league leader, STAROBA on 22 July 2007. The game will be played at Padang ILP, Bangi and we are gunning for a victory to ensure our title hopes for this year stays alive.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 4 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 4 (ANSARA K. Terengganu vs. VIOBA)

On 1 July 2007, we played our 4th league game of this year against ANSARA Kuala Terengganu on our home turf, the VI Greens. We ended the game with a disappointing 0-0 draw which was a blow to our title aspirations for this year. With all the other results not going our way, we need to concentrate on winning our three remaining games and hope for the best. Our Achilles' heel this year is our failure to convert goal-scoring chances which was apparent during our game against ANSARA Kuala Terengganu. The postponement of fixtures by the organizer certainly didn't help our cause either.

Hopefully, by the time our next game comes around we will be able to fine tune our strategies and our forwards will find the back of the net once again. Our next match will be on 15 July 2007 at VI Greens against ANSARA Kuantan.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 3 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 3 (VIOBA vs. SEMSAH)

Our Matchday 3 opponents, SEMSAH forfeited the match which was supposed to be played on Sunday, 3 June 2007 at VI. As a result, VIOBA was declared the winner by the scoreline of 3-0. As things stand, we are now ranked second in the league table with 7 points from 3 games and are separated from the league leader, MCOBA, only by virtue of goal difference.

On the day, a friendly game was played instead and a mixture of Old Boys provided the opposition for the VIOBA team. Even though the game was played in the rain and a very wet pitch, both sides still showed very competitive spirit. The game ended 3-3.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 2 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 2 (VIOBA vs. MCOBA)

After our opening game victory, our next opposition is MCOBA. The match which was supposed to be our first home game of the season was played on Sunday, 27th May 2007 at F.A.S. Field, Kelana Jaya due to the unavailability of the VI Ground. There was a healthy turn out of players eager to don the VIOBA colors with the return of regulars who were unavailable for the opening game and new players with brimming potential waiting in the wings to showcase their talents.

The game was played on a rain-soaked pitch which made it a little difficult for the players. We started out with a 4-3-3 formation with the intention to control the midfield area and attacking the opposition using both flanks. The first half started extremely cagey for both teams and most of the battles were fought in a crowded midfield area. We had the upper hand over our opposition and created a few openings but the drab first half ended 0-0.

However, the second half was a totally different affair. The game was more open and MCOBA started threatening with long balls over our defensive back line for their speedy forwards to chase after. One of those long balls resulted in a corner kick which they scored from after a goalmouth scramble. Our players regrouped and with the introduction of Wan Khairul Ardrin ('02) and Mohd Noor Shakher ('00), we started to boss the midfield and began a relentless siege on MCOBA's goal. Finally, with the clock winding down, we were rewarded a freekick down the left touchline. The resulting freekick taken by Raziz Md Sa'at ('96), deflected of MCOBA's defensive wall and their goalkeeper flapped at the ball. The ball fell kindly to Saiful Bahrin Harris ('99) who finished with a simple tap-in. The game ended 1-1.

Our next game will be played at the VI Ground against SEMSAH on Sunday, 3rd June 2007. For more info on VIOBA's progress in this year's Malaysia Alumni League, please visit www.ligaalumni.com.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 1 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League

Matchday 1 (SEMESAAS vs. VIOBA)

On the 13th of May 2007, the first round of matches for this year’s Malaysia Alumni League got under way. We started our campaign against SEMESAAS. The game was played at RRI ‘A’ Field, Sungai Buloh.

We were missing a few regulars in the team due to other commitments and the team captain, Muhammad Irfan ('94) was also down with fever on that particular day.

The game was played in the rain and our players started the game a little bit shaky. But, as the first half progressed, they became more and more confident and we took the lead through Wan Khairul Ardrin ('02)’s superb half volley. The ball came to him from a freekick after a deflection off an opposition’s defender.

After the first goal, our players started to settle down and played a more fluent passing game. The second goal came soon after. Mohd Syazwan Zulkifli ('04), who was playing down the right flank, turned his marker and left him for dead. He had a clear run on goal but eventually he was body-checked by an opposition inside the penalty area with no intention of playing the ball. The referee blew for a spot kick without any hesitation. The resulting spot kick was converted by Muhammad Shahir Khalid ('01) confidently. The first half ended with our team leading by the scoreline 2-0.

We started the second half pretty much as we ended the first, where we controlled the midfield for most parts and hit the opposition on the counter on a few occasions. We had chances to kill off the game but unfortunately we were unable to add to our tally. Some golden opportunities were squandered particularly by Muhammad Shahir Khalid ('01) and a gilt-edged chance missed by the second half substitute, Mohd Noor Shakher ('00).

Our defenders and goalkeeper weren’t really tested throughout the game with the colossal Anwar Ridhwan Abd Rahim ('05) leading the back line. The game ended 2-0.

Overall, it was a good showing for our first game with three points in the bag and no goals conceded. The only blemish on the day was the three yellow cards shown to our players, Raziz Md Sa’at ('96), Anwar Ridhwan Abd Rahim ('05) and Mohd Khaliff ('03).

Hopefully, we’ll do better in our next game against a much tougher opposition in the form of MCOBA. Our next match will be played at our home ground on the 27th May 2007.

2007 VIOBA Inter-Batch Futsal Tournament Report

The 2007 VIOBA Inter-Batch Tournament was held recently on the 6th of May 2007 at Sports Planet Ampang. This is the 3rd edition of this annually held event. The tournament was organized by Batch ’99 committee with help from Mr. Mohd Rashdan Abd Rashid as the tournament director.

30 teams participated in this year’s tournament whereas 20 teams participated in the Super League Division and 10 teams in the Veteran League Division.

The guests of honor of the tournament were Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal.

The tournament director and the organizers worked hard and were successful in securing sponsorship from the following individuals and organizations:

Golden Arches Sdn Bhd (McDonald’s)

- Players’ Lunch Meals (McChicken, Apple Pie, Soft Drink)

Permanis Sdn Bhd

- Energy Drinks (Sting, 7-Up Revive)

VIOBA Foundation

- Tournament T-Shirts

Batch of ‘96

- Match Balls & Bibs

Mr. Andrew Abishegam

- Drinking Water

Mr. Arman Salleh (Batch ’95)

- Food Hampers

Dato’ Dina Rizal

- Personal Contribution of RM 1,200

The day started with a little hiccup due to Sports Planet Ampang not opening its doors at the time that was agreed upon. As a result, the organizers went through a mad rush to set up everything (registration counter, p.a. system, etc.) to get things started.

The tournament which was suppose to start at 9.00 a.m. eventually began at 10.00 a.m. with the emcee for the day, Mr. Mohd Mokhtaruddin Bain, asking his fellow Victorians to gather round the centre court for the opening ceremony. The emcee welcomed all in attendance and invited VIOBA’s President, Dato’ Yusli Mohamed Yusoff to say a few words as a welcoming speech to the participants. Next up is the prize giving ceremony for the VIOBA Charity Shield which was jointly organized by last year’s Mokhtar Dahari Challenge Shield champion, the batch of ’94 and Futsal champion, the batch of ’96. The shield was presented by Dato’ Yusli to the representative from the batch of ’96 which became the inaugural winner of the shield by winning the game played on 22nd April 2007 by the score of 2-1. Finally, Dato’ Yusli accompanied by the tournament director and 4 team captains from the batch of ’96 officially launched the tournament by way of kicking the match balls into the air.

The First Round-League Stage matches started at 10.15 a.m. and finished around 12.45 p.m. Participating teams were then asked to attend the team photography session before collecting their lunch packs from the registration counter. Lunch break was from 12.45 p.m. to 1.45 p.m. and the Second Round-Knockout Stage started soon after.

Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal arrived at the venue at 3.00 p.m. and was shown their way around the venue by the tournament director Mr. Rashdan to meet the players and see participating teams strutting their stuff in quarterfinals and semifinals matches.

The exhibition match between ‘VI Selection’ and Team McDonald’s started at 3.30 p.m. and Dato’ Dina Rizal was sporting enough to play with the VI Selection team in the 1st half of the game. The game ended 0-0. The Veteran League Final match took place next and the batch of ’91 ran out eventual winners by defeating the batch of ’90 2-1. The Super League Final was a closely fought encounter but the batch of ’95 came out trumps over their much younger opposition, the batch of ’02 with the scoreline of 2-1.

The prize giving ceremony began at 4.15 p.m. with brief speeches from Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal. Dato’ Dina Rizal then gave away the prizes for the Winners’ Pool Final “Man of the Match” for both categories. Next, Dato’ Yusli presented the medals and trophy to the winners in the Veteran League categories. Finally, the Super League champion received their medals and trophy from Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan. As a token of appreciation the tournament director then presented the guests of honor with souvenirs. (Full results are shown in the table below).

Overall, it was a good day out for everybody involved with the tournament and the organizers received a lot of positive feedbacks from the players and sponsors as well as some constructive criticisms that are really appreciated and will be taken on board for future held events.

A noteworthy mention goes to the batch of ’75, the most senior batch to ever take part in the short history of the tournament. They gave it their all on the day and showed true ‘VI Spirit’ to all. They made it all the way to the Losers’ Pool Final and were the unlucky finalist. As a result, the organizers decided to name them “The Most Outstanding Team of the Tournament”.

Our most heartfelt appreciation to all the sponsors without whom the tournament won’t be as big a success as it is. I would like also to applaud the organizers, the batch of ’99 for their hard work and endeavors. Last but not least, to all my fellow Victorians who took part in the tournament, your participation means a lot and let us all participate and contribute in future VIOBA held events and make them more meaningful and memorable.
