SJAA vs VIOBA RIVALRY GOLF CHALLENGE 2009

Message from VIOBA Golf Captain Mr Johan Aly Rais ‘88,

I am pleased to inform you all that the golf rivalry game is set as mentioned below.

Date: 20th December 2009, Sunday

Venue: Bukit Kemuning Golf & Country Resort

Time: 12 noon

Entry fee: RM220

Registration: before 24th November

Payment: by 24th November

Mode of play: Stableford system 36

Golf package include green fees, twin sharing buggy, golf insurance, lunch & dinner.

The more the merrier as 40 pax is min. per side, it would be best if we can send 50 and Kemuning has no choice but to close the entire course for the afternoon.

This is what we have been waiting for and lets do the school proud and 'trash' them again. The only game which we lost to SJI was the hockey game, lets not give them the pleasure in beating us again.

Please inform your friends (of course VI boys only!) who are good and keen golfers to join us as the database we have with us is not complete.

Would appreciate if you can revert really fast on your confirmation.

Spread the word and let us "Rise to the Occasion".

Thanks and best regards

Johan (017-369 6669)

V.I. School Band is World's Best

News taken from NST.

Victoria Institution's cadet corps band proved that it was the best in the world when it clinched the grand prize at the World Band Challenge 2009 in Modena, Italy. With the theme "Volcano", the band, comprising 90 members from Forms One to Lower Six, beat the defending champion from Holland on July 6 to win a trophy and an appreciation certificate.

VI headmistress Azizah Othman said the victory was made sweeter by the fact that the school was celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

"The win is the biggest prize for the school.

"The sweat, tears and sacrifice since January have been worth it.

"I think this will also be an impetus for all students to work hard towards victory in other competitions," she said at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.

The band was welcomed home by some 50 VI Supporters Club members and parents.

Azizah said the band scored 1,052 points.

This gave it a narrow 13-point lead over its Dutch rival which scored 1,039 points.

"The song selection, which is from the Puteri Gunung Ledang movie and theatre performance obviously gave us an edge and additional points," she said.

"The Dutch team only managed to give a typical band performance," she added.

Rivalry Games 2009 - St. John's Institution vs. Victoria Institution

Venue: St. John's Institution, Kuala Lumpur.

It was a special day for current students and ex-students of two of Kuala Lumpur's premier schools and sworn rivals, St. John's Institution (SJI) and Victoria Institution (VI) who were there at the St. John's Institution grounds to witness the soft launch of the inaugural Rivalry Games between the two schools.

The idea for the games was mooted by alumni association of both schools, St. John's Institution Alumni Association (SJIAA) and Victoria Institution Old Boys' Association (VIOBA) and over the coming months five events have been scheduled to be played out between these two great institutions.

Football is the first event of the games and the present boys of SJI and VI took the field to kick start Rivalry Games 2009. And of course, the VI boys came out winners (as usual!) with a 5-0 scoreline over the SJI boys.

Next up, presidents of both alumni associations, Dato' Zulkifli Ishak of SJIAA and Encik Amrul Zeflin Anim of VIOBA gave brief speeches and officially launched Rivalry Games 2009. The committee members of both association then faced-off in a penalty shootout which acted as a launch gambit for the games and VIOBA won 4-2.

Highlight of the day came next when ex-Johannians and ex-Victorians played out an interesting and closely fought match. The ex-Johannians took an early lead but in the end ex-Victorians won the match with a 3-2 scoreline.

The day ended with the prize giving ceremony for the winners on the day, but the icing on the cake was the singing of the school songs by students and ex-students of both school. The next event for Rivalry Games 2009 is badminton which is scheduled on 4 July 2009 at St. John's Institution.

Stay tuned...and come join the fun! Viva Victoria!
