2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 2 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 2 (VIOBA vs. MCOBA)

After our opening game victory, our next opposition is MCOBA. The match which was supposed to be our first home game of the season was played on Sunday, 27th May 2007 at F.A.S. Field, Kelana Jaya due to the unavailability of the VI Ground. There was a healthy turn out of players eager to don the VIOBA colors with the return of regulars who were unavailable for the opening game and new players with brimming potential waiting in the wings to showcase their talents.

The game was played on a rain-soaked pitch which made it a little difficult for the players. We started out with a 4-3-3 formation with the intention to control the midfield area and attacking the opposition using both flanks. The first half started extremely cagey for both teams and most of the battles were fought in a crowded midfield area. We had the upper hand over our opposition and created a few openings but the drab first half ended 0-0.

However, the second half was a totally different affair. The game was more open and MCOBA started threatening with long balls over our defensive back line for their speedy forwards to chase after. One of those long balls resulted in a corner kick which they scored from after a goalmouth scramble. Our players regrouped and with the introduction of Wan Khairul Ardrin ('02) and Mohd Noor Shakher ('00), we started to boss the midfield and began a relentless siege on MCOBA's goal. Finally, with the clock winding down, we were rewarded a freekick down the left touchline. The resulting freekick taken by Raziz Md Sa'at ('96), deflected of MCOBA's defensive wall and their goalkeeper flapped at the ball. The ball fell kindly to Saiful Bahrin Harris ('99) who finished with a simple tap-in. The game ended 1-1.

Our next game will be played at the VI Ground against SEMSAH on Sunday, 3rd June 2007. For more info on VIOBA's progress in this year's Malaysia Alumni League, please visit www.ligaalumni.com.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 1 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League

Matchday 1 (SEMESAAS vs. VIOBA)

On the 13th of May 2007, the first round of matches for this year’s Malaysia Alumni League got under way. We started our campaign against SEMESAAS. The game was played at RRI ‘A’ Field, Sungai Buloh.

We were missing a few regulars in the team due to other commitments and the team captain, Muhammad Irfan ('94) was also down with fever on that particular day.

The game was played in the rain and our players started the game a little bit shaky. But, as the first half progressed, they became more and more confident and we took the lead through Wan Khairul Ardrin ('02)’s superb half volley. The ball came to him from a freekick after a deflection off an opposition’s defender.

After the first goal, our players started to settle down and played a more fluent passing game. The second goal came soon after. Mohd Syazwan Zulkifli ('04), who was playing down the right flank, turned his marker and left him for dead. He had a clear run on goal but eventually he was body-checked by an opposition inside the penalty area with no intention of playing the ball. The referee blew for a spot kick without any hesitation. The resulting spot kick was converted by Muhammad Shahir Khalid ('01) confidently. The first half ended with our team leading by the scoreline 2-0.

We started the second half pretty much as we ended the first, where we controlled the midfield for most parts and hit the opposition on the counter on a few occasions. We had chances to kill off the game but unfortunately we were unable to add to our tally. Some golden opportunities were squandered particularly by Muhammad Shahir Khalid ('01) and a gilt-edged chance missed by the second half substitute, Mohd Noor Shakher ('00).

Our defenders and goalkeeper weren’t really tested throughout the game with the colossal Anwar Ridhwan Abd Rahim ('05) leading the back line. The game ended 2-0.

Overall, it was a good showing for our first game with three points in the bag and no goals conceded. The only blemish on the day was the three yellow cards shown to our players, Raziz Md Sa’at ('96), Anwar Ridhwan Abd Rahim ('05) and Mohd Khaliff ('03).

Hopefully, we’ll do better in our next game against a much tougher opposition in the form of MCOBA. Our next match will be played at our home ground on the 27th May 2007.

2007 VIOBA Inter-Batch Futsal Tournament Report

The 2007 VIOBA Inter-Batch Tournament was held recently on the 6th of May 2007 at Sports Planet Ampang. This is the 3rd edition of this annually held event. The tournament was organized by Batch ’99 committee with help from Mr. Mohd Rashdan Abd Rashid as the tournament director.

30 teams participated in this year’s tournament whereas 20 teams participated in the Super League Division and 10 teams in the Veteran League Division.

The guests of honor of the tournament were Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal.

The tournament director and the organizers worked hard and were successful in securing sponsorship from the following individuals and organizations:

Golden Arches Sdn Bhd (McDonald’s)

- Players’ Lunch Meals (McChicken, Apple Pie, Soft Drink)

Permanis Sdn Bhd

- Energy Drinks (Sting, 7-Up Revive)

VIOBA Foundation

- Tournament T-Shirts

Batch of ‘96

- Match Balls & Bibs

Mr. Andrew Abishegam

- Drinking Water

Mr. Arman Salleh (Batch ’95)

- Food Hampers

Dato’ Dina Rizal

- Personal Contribution of RM 1,200

The day started with a little hiccup due to Sports Planet Ampang not opening its doors at the time that was agreed upon. As a result, the organizers went through a mad rush to set up everything (registration counter, p.a. system, etc.) to get things started.

The tournament which was suppose to start at 9.00 a.m. eventually began at 10.00 a.m. with the emcee for the day, Mr. Mohd Mokhtaruddin Bain, asking his fellow Victorians to gather round the centre court for the opening ceremony. The emcee welcomed all in attendance and invited VIOBA’s President, Dato’ Yusli Mohamed Yusoff to say a few words as a welcoming speech to the participants. Next up is the prize giving ceremony for the VIOBA Charity Shield which was jointly organized by last year’s Mokhtar Dahari Challenge Shield champion, the batch of ’94 and Futsal champion, the batch of ’96. The shield was presented by Dato’ Yusli to the representative from the batch of ’96 which became the inaugural winner of the shield by winning the game played on 22nd April 2007 by the score of 2-1. Finally, Dato’ Yusli accompanied by the tournament director and 4 team captains from the batch of ’96 officially launched the tournament by way of kicking the match balls into the air.

The First Round-League Stage matches started at 10.15 a.m. and finished around 12.45 p.m. Participating teams were then asked to attend the team photography session before collecting their lunch packs from the registration counter. Lunch break was from 12.45 p.m. to 1.45 p.m. and the Second Round-Knockout Stage started soon after.

Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal arrived at the venue at 3.00 p.m. and was shown their way around the venue by the tournament director Mr. Rashdan to meet the players and see participating teams strutting their stuff in quarterfinals and semifinals matches.

The exhibition match between ‘VI Selection’ and Team McDonald’s started at 3.30 p.m. and Dato’ Dina Rizal was sporting enough to play with the VI Selection team in the 1st half of the game. The game ended 0-0. The Veteran League Final match took place next and the batch of ’91 ran out eventual winners by defeating the batch of ’90 2-1. The Super League Final was a closely fought encounter but the batch of ’95 came out trumps over their much younger opposition, the batch of ’02 with the scoreline of 2-1.

The prize giving ceremony began at 4.15 p.m. with brief speeches from Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan and Dato’ Dina Rizal. Dato’ Dina Rizal then gave away the prizes for the Winners’ Pool Final “Man of the Match” for both categories. Next, Dato’ Yusli presented the medals and trophy to the winners in the Veteran League categories. Finally, the Super League champion received their medals and trophy from Datuk Mohd Zaman Khan. As a token of appreciation the tournament director then presented the guests of honor with souvenirs. (Full results are shown in the table below).

Overall, it was a good day out for everybody involved with the tournament and the organizers received a lot of positive feedbacks from the players and sponsors as well as some constructive criticisms that are really appreciated and will be taken on board for future held events.

A noteworthy mention goes to the batch of ’75, the most senior batch to ever take part in the short history of the tournament. They gave it their all on the day and showed true ‘VI Spirit’ to all. They made it all the way to the Losers’ Pool Final and were the unlucky finalist. As a result, the organizers decided to name them “The Most Outstanding Team of the Tournament”.

Our most heartfelt appreciation to all the sponsors without whom the tournament won’t be as big a success as it is. I would like also to applaud the organizers, the batch of ’99 for their hard work and endeavors. Last but not least, to all my fellow Victorians who took part in the tournament, your participation means a lot and let us all participate and contribute in future VIOBA held events and make them more meaningful and memorable.

The Batch of '94 (2006 Mokhtar Dahari Challenge Shield Champion) and the Batch of '96 (2006 Inter-Batch Futsal Champion) took the initiative to organize a friendly game on 22 April 2007 which acted as the curtain raiser for this year's events. They were even kind enough to donate a shield for the event which hopefully will continue to be organized annually.

The match was played in good spirit and the winners on the day was the Batch of '96 with the scoreline of 2-1 and became the inaugural winners of the event. The guest of honor for the event was Tuan Hj. Syed Abu Hassan who presented the shield to the winning team.
