114th Founders Day Celebration

On 14 August 2007, Victorians around the world rejoiced as our beloved school celebrated its 114th birthday. How grateful we are to be a part of this great institution and we have our founding fathers to thank for that. The school celebrated by inviting a few ex-Victorians to share their experiences of what it meant to be a Victorian with the current crop of students.

V.I.O.B.A. also didn't miss out on the celebration as the new 07/08 V.I.O.B.A. and V.I.O.B.A. Foundation committee including a few other Old Boys (and an Old Girl) plus the principal, Pn. Azizah Othman and senior assistant, En. Othman Abd Samad got together at the V.I.O.B.A. clubhouse for the celebration. The Old Boys then serenaded the occasion by singing the school song before Dato' Yusli Mohamed Yusoff did the honor of cutting the cake. Happy Birthday VI!

SJI vs. VI Friendlies, Gathering of Batch '57 and Union Cup Soft Launch

On 5 August 2007, a couple of friendly matches between Victorians and Johanians were also held before the alumni league match. The 1st game was between VI '81 vs. St. John '87 which ended with the scoreline 4-2 in favor of the Victorians. Jack Oon was a hat-trick hero for VI '81 with Wong Chee Loke grabbing the other goal. It goes to show that even with a significant age gap between the two teams, Victorians still show their class and came out on top.

The 2nd game saw a mixture of Victorians from batches of '96 & '99 vs. St. John '96. The game was also won by the Victorians with the scoreline 4-2 with Ahmad Nazim Ali and Muhammad Nasir Ali scoring 2 of the goals.

These friendlies were jointly organized by VI '96 and St. John '96 to coincide with the soft launch of Union Cup 2007. Union Cup 2007 was mooted by the batch of '96 from both schools as an annual event to bridge the rivalry between the two schools. More details on the event will be posted as soon as it is finalized.

On that Sunday, the batch of '57 also held a gathering at the VIOBA clubhouse and they were more than happy to pose for a picture for VIOBA Events blog.

2007 Malaysia Alumni League - Matchday 7 Report

2007 Malaysia Alumni League
Matchday 7 (SJAA vs. VIOBA)

Our last league game of this year against SJAA was played on 5 August 2007 at VI Greens. The game was highly anticipated due to the fact that we were still in contention for the title (being a point behind league leaders, STAROBA), we were defending our unbeaten streak in the league and that it was a derby match against the Johanians.

We had to make a few changes in the starting eleven due to unavailability of some players due to other commitments. It went from bad to worse as the game got under way because it seemed that our players weren't up to speed earlier on and our goal was constantly under siege from the Johanians forwards. Midway through the 1st half, our players settled down and managed to create a few half chances to open the scoring but the half ended 0-0.

The Johanians did manage to grab the lead early on in the 2nd half. The goal came as a result of a failed offside trap which left one of their players on a one-on-one situation with our keeper which he duly converted. A 50-strong crowd (made up of Hostel Boys and Old Boys) cheered our players on to lift their spirit. After a few substitutions, the game started to swing in our favor. Soon after, we earned a corner kick which was taken by Ahmad Fazli Dzulkifli ('96), the beautifully weighted ball made its way to Mohammad Razeen Khalid ('97), a 2nd half substitute, who climbed highest to head the ball in from point blank range. Mohd Farid Hamid ('97) then missed a gilt-edged chance after a solo run from midfield by shooting straight at the keeper. We surged forward to search for a winning goal knowing the league title was on the line but to no avail. The game ended 1-1.

News then filtered through from Bangi that STAROBA had won their encounter with MCOBA 1-0 which made the result from our game academic. We finished as the runner-up in Division One behind STAROBA this year with the record of 4 wins, 3 draws and no losses. In doing so, we have our heads held high as we were the only team to beat STAROBA and became the only unbeaten team in the league this year.

On behalf of the VIOBA Football Team, I would like to thank Mr. Adam Muza Muhayen for sponsoring bottled drinking water for the team this year. I would also like to thank the team captain, Muhammad Irfan Al-Akiti and Syed Shadzly Wafa who are hanging up their boots from representing VIOBA to pave the way for new and up and coming players to represent the team.

Next up is the ANSARA Cup, which starts on 5 August 2007. We were the runner-up in 2005 and hopefully we will bring back the cup this year.
